Lahinch Co. Clare
In 1699,a local landowner Charles Campbell ordered his farm labourers to dig up a part of Newgrange, which then had the appearance of a large mound of earth, so that he could collect stone from within it. While digging they first discovered the entrance stone. The stone is covered in spirals with a straight line in the middle. A large decorated stone at the opposite side of Newgrange also has the straight line and the triple spiral is also on another stone inside the monument. I am from Lahinch in County Clare and have been visiting the ancient sites of Ireland since 2015. I am very interested how the doorway of stone circles always seem to be purposefully pointed at the sunrise or sunset at key times of the year. This suggests that the people who built these forts thousands of years ago had a deep understanding of astronomy and were more advanced than we give them credit for.
